The simple version
Berk’s Dragon Academy, or BDA, is a fan-made How to Train Your Dragon Minecraft mod and map project.
The goal is straightforward: recreate HTTYD in Minecraft as accurately as possible. That means accurate dragons, accurate Berk, accurate Viking/Hooligan worldbuilding, high-quality assets, and systems that make the world playable instead of just decorative.
BDA originally came to be on March 10th, 2022. After years working on the project, a "hard reset" was decided upon in March 2026 by the team. This reset aimed to redefine the project's goals and restructure behind-the-scenes, providing the most efficient foundation possible to allow us to recontinue consistent development and resume delivering new content to our followers.
There are two sides to BDA. The mod adds dragons, taming, riding, breeding, eggs, Hooligan villages, mobs, weapons, gear, UI, and gameplay systems. The map/build side recreates Berk and the surrounding HTTYD world as a large playable environment.

What the mod adds
The mod is the gameplay side of BDA. It is where dragons become more than models and where the player actually interacts with the HTTYD world.
| Part of the mod | What it means |
|---|---|
| Dragons | Night Fury, Deadly Nadder, and Gronckle are the first supported V0.5 species. |
| Taming | You do not just click food on a dragon. You approach carefully, avoid threatening it, build trust, and finish the bond. |
| Riding | A tamed adult dragon can be ridden once it has a saddle and enough progression. |
| Dragon ownership | Tamed dragons have hunger, levels, XP, bond, commands, storage, GUI, riding, combat, and downed-state recovery. |
| Eggs and hatchlings | Dragons can breed, create eggs, hatch into owned hatchlings, and grow into adults. |
| Hooligan villages | Cold-coastal Viking villages give the world a human side and provide traders, gear, and dragon saddles. |
| Weapons and gear | Players can get Viking weapons, shields, bolas, Hiccup’s Dagger, and dragon saddles through Hooligan trading. |
| Passive mobs | Seagulls, crows, and HTTYD sheep add life around villages and the world. |
What makes it different
The standard is canon accuracy. BDA is not trying to be a loose dragon fantasy mod. It is trying to stay true to HTTYD while still working as Minecraft gameplay.
That affects everything: how the dragons are modeled, how textures are handled, how Berk is built, how Hooligan villages look, what gear exists, where dragons spawn, how taming works, and which systems are added first.
If someone is looking for a serious HTTYD Minecraft mod, the point of this website should be obvious within the first page: BDA is trying to be that project.
Current development target
The current mod target is V0.5. V0.5 aims to explore about half of the mod's planned content relating to HTTYD 1. It is not half of the movie's content itself, but rather, half of the features we at Berk's Dragon Academy plan to implement into the mod based and sourced from the first movie.
It gives the project its first playable base: the first dragons, the first villages, the first gear, and the main dragon systems. V1 will not replace those systems with something unrelated. It will add more to them until the HTTYD 1 side of the project feels complete.
Project independence
BDA is its own project. It is not affiliated with Isle of Berk, New Berk’s Dawn, or any other HTTYD Minecraft project.
We cannot answer support questions, ownership questions, download questions, or development questions for Isle of Berk or related successor projects. If someone needs information about Isle of Berk, they should contact the people running New Berk’s Dawn or the relevant project directly.
Who leads it
BDA is led by Servile and Ethan. The project is split into two main paths: the mod side and the map/build side. Servile is more hands-on with the mod side, including its systems, asset guidelines, structure, and production standards. Ethan is more hands-on with the map/build side, including its world direction, build guidelines, structure, and larger playable environment. Both sides are being built as equal parts of the same goal: recreating HTTYD in Minecraft properly.
